Owen Weller was born in Spokane, WA, and attended undergraduate college at Warren Wilson college for Environmental Studies. He then received his M.S. in Biology from Southeastern Louisiana University, studying invertebrate communities in wetlands.

After graduate school, Owen worked as a full time instructor in the biology department at Southeastern for two and a half year. He then left to get back out into the field and worked for four years for the US Forest Service as a seasonal botany technician in Oregon and Washington. After this, he came back to New Orleans in the winters doing odd jobs, including leading Kayak Swamp tours with Louisiana Lost Lands Environmental Tours.
